SDA Bocconi School of Management

Massimo is Fellow of Business Law at SDA Bocconi, where he is the director of the program on International Arbitration and Risk Management, as well as Full Professor at the Department of Law of the University "Aldo Moro", Bari, where he holds the chair of International Law, and academic fellow at the Department of Law of the Bocconi University, where he co-teaches Dispute Resolutions in a Globalized World. Tenured professor since 1994, throughout his academic career he also taught Private International Law, International Economic Law, EU Law and European Commercial Law.

Massimo is name partner of ArbLit, Milan, a law firm specialized in cross-border disputes. Before he has been a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Chiomenti, having started his professional activities at the Legal Department of ENI S.p.A.

Massimo’s interests focus on international arbitration, investment law, international company and insolvency law, and European law. Massimo is the author of the first-ever written treatise in English on International Arbitration in Italy (Kluwer International, 2020) and one of the editors of a leading commentary on Italian arbitration law (CEDAM, 2017). He publishes regularly on Italian and international law reviews and is a member of the editorial boards of Rivista dell’arbitrato, Rivista di diritto societario and Diritto del commercio internazionale.

Upon invitation of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law, in January 2022 Massimo gave a course on Powers in international arbitration: between party autonomy, arbitral authority and State sovereignty.

Upon designation of the ICC World Council Massimo has been appointed Italian member of the ICC Court of Arbitration to serve for the 2021-2023 term. Since July 2018 Massimo had already participated to the works of the ICC Court as Italian alternate member.

Massimo holds a degree in Political Sciences (1979) and Law (1984) from the University of Bari, a LL.M. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law and PhD degree (1987) from the European University Institute.
