Since August 2016, I am seconded 50% of my time to the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Sciences, where I am Director of Public Engagement for Connected Health Cities and co-lead for Public Engagement for HeRC.  I also work 10% of my time for the pharmacy department at Salford Royal Hospitals Foundation Trust.

My research focuses on two areas:

  • the process and outcomes of prescribing in secondary care, and
  • public engagement/involvement in the use/linkage of health data for research.

I am a specialist advisor to Northwest NHS Research Design Service

Biography

After registering as a pharmacist in Northern Ireland in 1983, I worked for 2½ years in a mission hospital in Zambia, Central Africa, before returning to Belfast in 1986 to begin an MSc in Hospital Pharmacy. I worked as a clinical pharmacist in Hope Hospital, Salford, until the lure of research drew me to do my PhD in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Manchester, in 1994. I continued to work there as a post-doctoral researcher after securing a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship and took up an appointment clinical lecturer in 1999 and was promoted to clinical senior lecturer in 2006 and reader in 2011.  I was invited to be Visiting Professor in the Department of Pharmacy, University of Uppsala, Sweden from 2003 to 2008.
