Biography

Martin J. Siegel joined New York University Stern School of Business as an Adjunct Professor in 1999.

Prior to joining NYU Stern, he was a member of Long Term Capital Management (LTCM), a hedge fund in Greenwich, CT. He was responsible for trading international equities utilizing "Relative Value" and "Equity Pairs" strategies. He was also responsible for trading the sovereign debt including Brady Bonds in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Professor Siegel was with LTCM from January 1994 to November 1998.

Professor Siegel has been working in the areas of international debt and equity since 1970 when he joined the investment bank Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenerette. In 1973 he was asked by Salomon Brothers to create an International Equity department for the firm. He subsequently managed the International Equity Arbitrage trading and sales department at Salomon for nineteen years. Professor Siegel was also involved in the creation of the Salomon-Russell International Index. From 1989 to 1992, he built and managed the proprietary trading book for Latin American Equity at Salomon and successfully managed a portfolio in excess of $300 million.

Professor Siegel received a bachelor degree with a major in Economics from the University of Vermont in 1956. Upon graduation, he joined his father's firm in the apparel manufacturing business in New York. In 1965, he negotiated the sale of the firm to a major apparel manufacturer and remained as COO for an additional three years. He left the apparel industry in 1968 and enrolled at Columbia University where he received his M.B.A. in Finance in 1970 and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
