Overview

  • Martin holds a Senior Lecturer post in Cardiometabolic Medicine at the University of Manchester and he is an Honorary Consultant Physician at Manchester Diabetes Centre, Manchester Royal infirmary. His main research interest is the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases. He is Associate Editor for the scientific journal Diabetologia where he has responsibility for cardiovascular manuscripts. He is clinical lead at Manchester Diabetes Centre, lead physician for the islet cell transplantation service and co-lead for the diabetes-renal service.

Biography

  • Martin received his undergraduate education at Edinburgh University Medical School. He was trained in Diabetes and Endocrinology in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, where he received a Doctorate of Medicine degree for research work in the cardiovascular complications of diabetes. Between 2000 and 2002 was a Research Fellow in Cardiology and Endocrinology at the Lahey Clinic, MA, USA where he worked with the Framingham Heart Study team. He was a Consultant Physician in General Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology in Chester, UK, between 2002 and 2006; and then moved to Manchester Royal Infirmary from 2006 until 2009, where he was a Consultant Physician in General Medicine and Diabetes.
  • In March 2009 he took up a HEFCE-funded Clinical Senior Lecturer post in Cardiometabolic Medicine, University of Manchester and since 2014 he has been funded by the University. His research focusses on the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disease and covers a range of areas including: sleep/chronotype; vascular stiffness; cardiovascular disease in diabetes; diabetes and malignancy; islet and pancreas transplantation and endocrine aspects of frailty. He has current research funding from National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), MRC, Diabetes UK and NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre.
  • Martin has publications in leading journals focusing on pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disease including several with the Framingham Heart Study and more recently with teams working with UK Biobank data. He leads several research collaborations with groups in the UK, Europe and the USA. He served as an Associate Editor for Diabetic Medicine, between 2004 and 2010, where he reviewed cardiovascular manuscripts and currently serves as Associate Editor for Diabetologia, Current Cardiovascular Risk Reports and Atherosclerosis online.
