WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management

Professor Martin Högl (MBA from Washington State Univ., doctorate from the University of Karlsruhe (TH), habilitation from the Technical University of Berlin) is head of the Institute for Leadership and Organization (ILO) at the LMU Munich. Before moving to LMU, Professor Högl taught at Washington State University (USA), Università Bocconi (Milan, Italy) and WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. He was also a visiting professor at the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern Univ., USA), the Curtin Univ. (Perth, Australia) and at the National Sun Yat-Sen University (Taiwan) and has given guest lectures at numerous international universities. He is an Affiliated Faculty Member of the WHU Center for Responsible Leadership.

Professor Högl has many years of experience working with executives of various seniorities in Europe, North America and Asia. He has carried out research collaborations with well-known companies in the USA and Europe. His work focuses on the following core areas of leadership:

  • Organizational agility and transformation for strategy implementation (including change management and creating an effective organizational culture)
  • Design and lead high-performance teams (including global virtual teams)
  • Strengthen the innovative power of employees (including management of R&D employees, lean innovation, cognition and creativity, and innovator resilience)
  • Develop value-based authentic leaders

Professor Högl has published in leading international journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Decision Sciences, Human Resource Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Product Innovation Management, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Science and Research Policy.

Martin Högl is Associate Editor of Human Resource Management (a Financial Times Top 50 Business Journal) and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Product Innovation Management, the Journal of World Business, and the Journal of Engineering and Technology Management. Professor Högl has received multiple awards in teaching and research, including the Best Teacher Award (from the WHU part-time MBA students) and the Richard Beckhard Prize from the MIT Sloan Management Review for the contribution 'How to manage virtual teams'. The research rankings of the Handelsblatt repeatedly identified Professor Högl as one of the leading scientists in the field of leadership, human resources management and organization.
