Dr. Mark Etherton is an MGH stroke neurologist and instructor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Etherton received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Texas at Southwestern Medical Center. His thesis dissertation work was conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Thomas Südhof where he characterized synaptic transmission in autism-relevant synaptic cell adhesion molecules. Dr. Etherton completed his residency in neurology as well as fellowship in vascular neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Etherton is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with board certifications in neurology and vascular neurology. He is also the associate director of the MGH Acute Stroke Services. Dr. Etherton has devoted his early career as a clinician-scientist to neuroimaging of acute stroke to understand and predict functional outcomes as a step toward developing novel therapeutics to reduce post-stroke disability. He has had continuous foundation support in this area of research throughout his career, including from the American Heart Association.
