Biography

The UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School

As Associate Dean and Director of UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business, I am proud to serve a vibrant community of 2000+ undergraduate students and staff at our beautiful UCD Belfield campus in Dublin, Ireland. As Associate Professor in Management (Organisational Behaviour and Work) I teach across the UCD Business portfolio from first year undergraduate to Executive Education, focusing on OB, Management and Development. I lean towards experiential methods and am especially interested in the dynamics of group assignments and how to build capacity and insight around collaborative working. My curiosity about the human side of organising reflects formation in HR&IR (University of Limerick) Management and Organisation Studies (UCD Smurfit, 1992), ethnographic study of the experience of working and managing in call centres (Lancaster University PhD 2003), and more recently ongoing clinical training as a group analyst with UCD School of Psychotherapy. I am a member of the Irish Group Analytic Society, bound by their code of ethics.I have published in journals including Work, Employment and Society; Human Resource Management Journal; Work and Occupations and Journal of Business Ethics; numerous book chapters and two edited collections - Work Matters: Critical Reflections on Contemporary Work (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) and Searching for the Human in Human Resource Management (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007) with Prof Sharon Bolton. As a member of the Centre for Business and Society, I am PI for a competitively funded Caroline postdoctoral project with Siobhan Airey, examining financing of the Sustainable Development Goals. I work with Dr Penelope Muzanenhamo and Dr David Nyaluke on the Proudly Made in Africa Project, and with Catherine McElhinney whose doctoral study of daughters of family business is soon to complete. All and all, I am proud and fortunate to work across a diverse and exciting portfolio, with some very inspiring people, and to love what I do.I recently competed a four-year period as Director and then Vice Principal for Teaching and Learning at the College of Business. In this role i led a multi-faceted team focused on the ongoing development of what and how we teach, and enchanting student experience through innovations and collaborations such as: The UCD Proudly Made in Africa Fellowship Teaching FellowshipThe College of Business Academic Writing Centre - Dr Megan McGurkBusiness eLearning team of educational technologists - Audrey Dempsey, Elanor McDonald, Bard Ovenden and Niall Flaherty. Future of Learning Project - a major 2020 change initiative centred on re-imagining the future of business education with Prof Ciaran O'hOgartaigh, Anita Blake and colleagues across the college. Hosting the 2017 International RoundTables for Managers with Professors Jonathan Gosling and Henry Mintzberg.
