Biography

Harvard Medical School

Dr. Lydia Gedmintas is a board-certified rheumatologist with a passion for clinical care, supplemented by a strong background and interest in education and patient-centered research. Her clinical training was comprised of a medical doctorate earned from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, followed by internal medicine training at Columbia Presbyterian hospital where she received the John Loeb Award for excellence in patient care and spent an additional year as chief resident. Dr. Gedmintas completed her clinical training with a sub-specialization in rheumatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Upon completion of training she was hired as clinical faculty in the division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy at Brigham and Women's hospital, where she is a practitioner at both the Boston and Foxborough campuses. More recently Dr. Gedmintas has developed a particular interest in rheumatologic manifestations among patients with malignancies, and is working with oncologists at Dana Farber to develop a rheumatology-oncology clinic at Brigham and Women’s hospital.

As chief medical resident, she led a diverse program of post-graduate educational activities including curriculum development and Medicine Grand Rounds; and developed her ongoing interest in clinical education. She continued this work during her rheumatology fellowship, participating in teaching sessions for the introduction to rheumatology curriculum at Harvard Medical School, and leading rheumatology didactic sessions in the musculoskeletal exam for internal medicine residents at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She extended this work overseas at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda, where she co-developed and helped pilot lectures for a mobile rheumatology curriculum for the International League Against Rheumatism- East Africa Initiative. Finally, she helped to develop a curriculum for the RAPID (Rheumatoid Arthritis: Primary Care Initiative for Improved Diagnosis) CME course, taught the physical exam at the Office Practice of Primary Care Medicine Conference at Harvard Medical School, lectured on rheumatoid arthritis at the Intensive Review of Internal Medicine course run by Harvard Medical School, and wrote rheumatology board review questions for the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Gedmintas’ research interests involve bone metabolism, osteoporosis and fracture, as well as more recently the rheumatologic manifestations of disease among patients with malignancies. She holds a Masters in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, where she focused her coursework on biostatistics and clinical epidemiology. She was awarded a T32 mentored research training grant, during which time she studied effects of HIV infection and antiretroviral medicines on bone metabolism, as well as associations between bisphosphonates and atypical femur fractures.
