Biography

Boston University

He analyzes the role of disruption in strategy, particularly in international business. He investigates the drivers and consequences of non-market strategies, such as corporate philanthropy, and market strategies, such as innovation, implemented in response to large shocks. He believes that strategic decisions made under disruption can have more significant implications for market competition and social welfare than those made under stable conditions. Shocks, such as climate change, natural disasters, financial crises, pandemics, and economic disintegration, reshape how stakeholders perceive companies’ societal roles, spur business renewal and radical innovation, modify social norms and regulations, and lead to enduring changes in risk attitudes. Given the uncertainty, uniqueness, and urgency that characterize large shocks, inefficient decision making often prevails, while learning is rare. With his work, he seeks to provide the business community with insights that foster resilience and sustainable growth as it grapples with the fundamental grand challenges posed by disruption at the global level. He holds a PhD in Applied Economics and Management from Wharton and degrees from the MIT and ITAM. Prior to academia, he worked with financial derivatives for two banks and with policy instruments to finance catastrophic risk for two multilateral agencies. He is in the review boards of the Academy Management Journal and the Strategic Management Journal.
