The College of Engineering: Integrative Systems + Design

Larry Beck has twelve years of experience in energy storage and lithium-ion battery development. He has lead several battery projects from early state R&D, through scale-up and into global manufacturing. As a Principal Scientist at A123Systems, Larry was the co-inventor of high-power NanoPhosphate, which is currently found in many HEV vehicle and stationary power applications around the world. Larry currently works for QuantumScape (San Jose, CA) and is a part-time consultant to several start-up companies. Prior to working in the battery field, Larry taught in the Chemistry Department at University of Michigan where he specialized in analytical characterization of porous (catalysis and adsorbents) materials.

PhD Scientist with broad knowledge of advanced materials for energy storage. Experienced R&D leader with record of innovation, scale-up and product development. Passionate about reducing carbon foot-print, through innovation of energy storage/utilization and launching the next generation of battery solutions. A record of achievement through building strong, productive teams; dedicated to mentoring and coaching young scientists to maximize talent and productivity.

Specialties: solid state chemistry, materials characterization, synthesis of novel materials, battery evaluation and testing, product development (stage gate), PPAP, SPC and six-sigma.
