Kristen Millares Young

Kristen Millares Young is the author of the novel Subduction, a Paris Review staff pick called “whip-smart” by the Washington Post and “a brilliant debut” by the Seattle Times. Subduction was a finalist for two International Latino Book Awards in 2020. As editor of Seismic: Seattle, City of Literature, Millares Young curated, commissioned and edited essays and poems by leading writers that include New York Times columnist Timothy Egan, Dr. Charles Johnson, Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna, Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith, queer memoirist Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, and Ken Workman, the great-great-great-great grandson of Chief Si’ahl.

Anthologized in Alone Together: Love, Grief and Comfort During the Time of COVID-19, Latina Outsiders: Remaking Latina Identity and Pie & Whiskey, a New York Times New & Noteworthy Book Millares Young’s personal essays are also forthcoming in The Rumpus and Advanced Creative Nonfiction: A Writer's Guide and Anthology (Bloomsbury, March 2021). Her essays have appeared most recently in the Washington Post, Literary Hub and the Guardian.

Her stories have been recognized by the Society for Features Journalism, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Millares Young was a fellow at UC Berkeley’s Knight Digital Media Center, the Jack Straw Writing Program and the University of Washington Graduate School, where earned her Master of Fine Arts as a GO-MAP Scholar. In 2003, Kristen graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with an A.B. in history and literature.
