Kevin Chan

Dr. Kevin C. Chan is an assistant professor in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Radiology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. His laboratory focuses on developing and applying new methods for non-invasively imaging neurodegeneration, neurodevelopment, neuroplasticity, and neuroregeneration in vision-related diseases and injuries in order to guide vision preservation and restoration. Dr. Chan has over 15 years of experience in structural, metabolic, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research in the eye and brain of humans and animal models of glaucoma and other visual impairments. He completed his doctoral studies in biomedical engineering (neuroimaging) at The University of Hong Kong and was awarded the Li Ka Shing Prize for the best PhD thesis at the University. He was selected by the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) as a 2015 Emerging Vision Scientist. In addition, he is a Junior Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) since 2010, and a 2009-10 Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Chan received the BrightFocus Foundation National Glaucoma Research Awards in 2013, 2016, and 2019, the Alcon Research Institute Young Investigator Award in 2014, and the Research to Prevent Blindness/Stavros Niarchos Foundation International Research Collaborators award and Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in 2018. In 2019 he received the Thomas R. Lee Award for Glaucoma Research. In 2020 he received the Feldstein Medical Foundation Research Award for basic research. Dr. Chan is currently the deputy editor of the Neuroimaging section of Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, associate editor of Frontiers in Neuroscience - Brain Imaging Methods section and IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, and editorial board member of Quantitative Imaging in Medicine and Surgery and Neural Regeneration Research. He also serves as the vice-chair of the ISMRM Publications Committee (2018-21), as well as Chair of multidisciplinary ophthalmic imaging group (2020-21), member of the Annual Meeting Program Committee (2018-21), member of Publications Committee (2020-23), member of Advocacy and Outreach Committee (2021-24), and member of Global Members Committee (2022-25) of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
