Background and Education

Former Director, SAIS Europe (2006-2014); President emeritus of the University of Minnesota; was professor of chemical engineering and materials science, department chair, academic vice president and president of the University of Minnesota for more than three decades; was senior fellow for science and technology and senior vice president for programs at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York; member of the National Academy of Engineering; fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; founding fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering; member of the Council on Foreign Relations; former member and chairman of the National Research Council’s Board on Assessment of National Institute of Standards and Technology and NASA Astrophysics Performance Committee; former member of the Board of Life Sciences, the Commission on Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Applications, and the Science and Technology Advisory Panel to the Director of Central Intelligence; past chair of the Medical Technology Leadership Forum; PhD, chemical engineering, The Johns Hopkins University.
