Kees Lokman

Kees teaches design studios in the landscape architecture program. Before joining SALA in 2014, he taught at Washington University in St. Louis, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and at Archeworks, a hands-on, alternative design school in Chicago.

Kees has practiced landscape architecture at the offices of plantsman Piet Oudolf in the Netherlands and at Terry Guen Design Associates in Chicago, and is the founder of Parallax Landscape. The collaborative and interdisciplinary design and research platform explores design challenges related to water and food shortages, depleting energy resources, climate change, and ongoing urbanization. The work focuses on urban strategies that have the capacity to link each site’s unique character to ecologies, infrastructures, and economies on larger scales.

Parallax Landscape is the recipient of numerous design awards and recognition, including first prize in the “Transiting Cities – Low Carbon Futures” design competition in 2012, and in 2013 finalist in the international ideas competition “Infill Philadelphia – Soak it Up!” and winner of the International Garden Festival in Allariz, Spain. In 2014, Kees was shortlisted in the Netherlands for the Prix de Rome.

His writing and academic research, focused on the relationships between geography, economy, ecology, and infrastructure, has been published in various journals, including MONU Magazine and Landscape Architecture Frontiers.
