Biography
Karl Werder is an assistant professor at the Cologne Institute for Information Systems of the University of Cologne. Previously, he was a senior researcher and pilot leader at paluno, the Ruhr Institute for software technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany and worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Enterprise Systems of the University of Mannheim. Karl received his doctoral degree in Information Systems from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He graduated with a master's degree in Business Informatics from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He also holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, is a certified IT-Specialist, and has professional experiences from working at Procter and Gamble.
His research interests focus on digital innovation, system development and design, and software-intensive business. Karl serves as an Associated Editor at the Communications of the AIS. He was a visiting scholar at Georgia State University in 2019, served as an Associated Editor at ECIS 2021 and ICIS 2019, and helped organize the Dagstuhl Seminar on Software Business, Platforms, and Ecosystems: Fundamentals of Software Production Research in 2018. His work has been published or is forthcoming in leading journals, such as Journal of Management Information Systems, California Management Review, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Decision Support Systems, Information & Software Technology, Business & Information Systems Engineering, Information Technology & People, PLOS ONE, ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems, and IT Professional, among others. He served as an adhoc reviewer for many leading journals including MISQ, TSE, CMR, EJIS, JSIS, and ISJ, as well as independent research-supporting agencies such as NSF and Rannís. His teaching experiences include courses on Systems Analysis & Design, Fundamentals of Database Management Systems, and Software Development & Programming.
