Karen received her B.S in Educational Science from the Catholic University of Leuven, her M.S. in Human Resource Management from the University of Antwerp and her Ph.D. in Applied Economics (major: Organizational Behavior) from Ghent University.

Karen is affiliated with the Antwerp Management School as Professor Leadership and Academic Director of the “Start to Lead” program. She teaches leadership courses at the graduate and executive levels and facilitates in-company leadership development programs and workshops.

She is also part-time employed at Workitects where she does research and advises organizations on the new role of leaders in adaptive organizations.

Until the summer of 2013, Karen was a Faculty Member at the Robert H. Smith School of Business (University of Maryland) where she taught courses on Leadership, Human Capital Management and Leadership Development at all levels. Additionally, she served as an executive coach and provided consulting services to both public- and private-sector organizations in the United States and Europe. Some of the organizations that she worked with include: Ann Arundel Medical Center, DPP, NIH, Lockheed Martin and SAIC. Prior to joining the Smith School in 2007, she was a research associate at the Vlerick Management School.

Her expertise is primarily in the areas of leadership development, executive coaching, learning from on-the-job experiences and e-learning. Her work was published in both academic and practitioners’ journals and presented at national and international conferences, for which she received multiple awards.
