Biography
-
Karen Lohrmann is an artist, urbanist, writer, and curator who focuses on editorial processes as critical and projective tools in landscape visualization. She trained in architecture, art history, and scenic design at Aachen University, ETH and University of the Arts in Zurich, and TU Berlin. She has worked on contemporary urbanism and landscape and in film production. Combining these topics in her classes, she was on the faculty at TU Berlin, UCLA, Harvard GSD, and the University of Innsbruck, and currently teaches in the postgraduate program EDGE Design of Cities at SCI-Arc.
In 2001, she initiated SdMKLm together with Stefano de Martino. They address spaces in transformation, cultural manifestations, and resultant landscapes through projects, publications, exhibitions, and teaching. They have published three monographs and jointly initiated the platform Urban States, the edition Correspondents, and the testing ground Bay of Mars. Their ongoing cycle of works, Waiting Land was one of the conceptual segments of the FRAC's 2019-20 Biennale d'Architecture d'Orleans, Years of Solitude.
