Justin Barnes

Dr. Justin Barnes is an expert in the field of industrial development. Justin has worked in the South African manufacturing sector since 1995. He co-established B&M Analysts in 1997 and left the University of Natal at the end of 2002 to focus on the company’s growing interests. He still, however, retains strong academic links and was the chair of Industrial Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 2011 to 2014. Justin is presently chairman of B&M Analysts and serves on several industry development boards. All of Justin’s qualifications are from the University of Natal, with his BA Honours (Geography) completed cum laude in 1994, his MSocSci (Development Studies) completed cum laude in 1995 and his PhD (Development Studies - industrial specialisation), completed in 2001. Justin has developed strategies for many private firms over the years, and has advised the South African and other national governments on their industrial and trade policies. Justin was the lead consultant responsible for the development of South Africa’s present automotive and clothing, textiles, and footwear policies. His expertise has also led him to work in over 30 countries and to publish extensively on strategic challenges facing manufacturing sectors in developing economies.
