WU - Vienna University of Economics and Business
Jurgen Willems is Professor for Public Management and Governance in the Department of Management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien). His teaching and research cover a variety of topics on citizen-state and citizen-society interactions.
Concrete areas of interest are: Changing civic engagement and its new challenges for public policy and management; The increasing importance of bureaucratic reputations and the influence on citizens’ and public servants’ behaviors; Network governance for within-sector and cross-sector collaborative eco-systems; and the impact of new technologies on citizen-state and citizen-society interactions.
Jurgen Willems studied Economics (Ghent University) and Operations and Technology Management (Ghent University). Subsequently, he worked as a researcher at the Vlerick Business School (Belgium) in the field of Management & ICT. Concrete projects and executive teaching programs focused on Business Process Management and Business Intelligence. In 2009, he started his PhD at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) on the intersection of applied economics and psychology. In parallel, he finished his master degree in Quantitative Analysis for the Social Sciences (University of Leuven). After finishing his PhD (title: Nonprofit Governance and Effectiveness: Beyond the Organizational Perspective), he worked at the University of Hamburg in the field of public and nonprofit management. In 2014, he was interim professor for Public Management (University of Hamburg) and he obtained his Habilitation and Venia Legendi from the same university in 2019.
Jurgen Willems has been a visiting scholar at the University of Southern Denmark (Department of Political Science and Public Management), the American University in Washington (Department of Public Administration and Policy), l’Université de La Réunion (Institute of Business Administration and Le Centre d’Economie et de Management de l’Océan Indien), the University of Missouri (Henry W. Bloch School of Management, Center of Nonprofit Leadership), and the University of Texas at Austin (Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, RGK center for Philanthropy).
