Apprenticeship at Commerzbank AG, Kiel, Germany (1977 - 1979). Studies of business administration at the universities of Kiel and Zurich, Switzerland (1980 - 1985). MBA (Dipl.-Kfm.). From 1986 till 1989 research associate at the Chair of Finance, University of Kiel. Completion of PhD thesis (Dr. sc. pol.). Subsequently five years of consulting experience in several German banks. Lecturer at European Business School (ebs), Oestrich-Winkel (1992 - 1994).

Since 1995 Professor of Banking at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Areas of teaching and research are Business Engineering and Process Management in banks. In 2005, foundation of ProcessLab – a research centre of Frankfurt School focusing on process management in the financial services industry. Visiting Professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs/USA, at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, and the University of Hong Kong, China. From 2014 to 2018 holder of an endowed professorship for Bank and Process Management from Concardis GmbH.

Member of the supervisory board of Karis AG, Darmstadt, and liaison tutor of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Berlin.
