Judith Freedman

Judith Freedman is Emeritus Professor of Taxation Law and Policy at the University of Oxford.

From 2001-2019 she was the inaugural statutory Professor of Taxation Law at Oxford University Law Faculty and was one of initiators of the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation Centre, where she was director of legal research for some years. She was also one of the founding directors of The Oxford MSc in Taxation.

She has written extensively on various tax and corporate law topics, including small business taxation, tax and accounting, tax avoidance and tax policy making.

She was a member of the UK’s Aaronson General Anti-Avoidance Rule Study Group and has served on many other corporate law and tax policy committees.

In 2020 she was appointed to the Board of the UK Office of Tax Simplification.

She is a member of the Council of the UK Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and Chair of the IFS Tax Law Review Committee.

Judith is general editor of the British Tax Review as well as being on the editorial boards of several other journals.

Judith has been appointed a CBE for her services to tax research and as an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. She was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2016.

Teaching

Judith teaches on the mandatory Tax Principles and Policy course on the MSc in Taxation, taught by the Oxford Law Faculty in Partnership with the Oxford Centre for Business Taxation.
