Biography

Imperial College London

I am a health economist with a general interest in quasi-experimental policy analysis in health. Two current areas of research include sin taxes & subsidies, and the health of older populations, in relation to a NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Health Financing for Universal Health Coverage (focus countries: Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa).

On sin taxes & subsidies, my current focus is on the health-related impacts of removing fossil fuel subsidies. Previously, I studied the impacts of introducing sugar taxes, namely in Portugal.

On older populations, my focus is shifting from long-term care-related aspects in high-income countries to the challenges associated with growing older populations in low- and middle-income countries.

Previously I held appointments at Nova School of Business & Economics, Portugal, the School of Business & Management, Queen Mary University of London, and the Geneva School of Economics & Management, Switzerland, where I obtained my PhD in Econometrics.
