Joseph Maida

Joseph Maida (US and Italian) is an artist, writer, and educator based in New York City.

He has exhibited in the United States, Europe, Japan and China in solo exhibitions at Daniel Cooney Fine Art, Wallspace, the Nikon Salons, Tokyo and Osaka, and 403 International Art Center, Wuhan, and group exhibitions at the International Center of Photography; the Queens Museum; Yancey Richardson Gallery; FOAM, Amsterdam; c/o Berlin; the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; the Kunsthalle Wien; and the Witte de With, Rotterdam, among others. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, W, Wallpaper, and Vice, and his monographs New Natives and Born Free and Equal: The Story of Loyal-_________ Americans were published by L’Artiere in 2015 and CONVOKE in 2018 respectively. His recent series, Things R Queer is featured in Aperture’s book on the history of food photography Feast for the Eyes as well as the eponymous traveling exhibition through Europe and the United States from 2018-2022 including stop at the Photographers Gallery, London, and the Hassalblad Foundation at the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Göteborg.

Maida has taught at schools including Yale University, Parsons the New School, SUNY Purchase, and has been on the faculty at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) since 2002, where he is the Chair of the BFA Photography and Video department and where he recently co-organized the Gender Symposium Untitled including Jennifer Blessing, Zackary Drucker, and Zanele Muholi.

Maida earned his BA summa cum laude from Columbia University and his MFA from Yale.
