Joseph Lathan, Ph.D., is Professor of Practice and Director of Online Programs in the Department of Learning and Teaching. Dr. Lathan oversees the development and growth of USD’s online Master’s in Education (M.Ed.), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and the newly created, Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.). in Education for Social Justice programs.

Possessing 2 decades of work experience in Higher Education Administration with the majority of those years in Online Education Administration, his areas of expertise include online learning: pedagogy, teaching, and best practices. As the Professor of Practice, Dr. Lathan has a passion for teaching in the fields of Psychology, Human Development, and Social Justice & Advocacy.

Dr. Lathan’s doctoral work focused on the study of workplace spirituality which led to his interest and development of Spiritually in Higher Education curriculum. His work promotes both a spirit-inclusive workplace and classroom and evaluates the benefits and challenges of having spirituality on a college campus or. His work asks the question, how can spiritual practices contribute to students’ spiritual growth and college success?
