Joseph Carter

Joseph R. Carter is dean of the Emeritus College at ASU. Carter has had an exceptional career with the W. P. Carey School of Business for 28 years and is recognized for his many contributions as a scholar, teacher and administrator. He is a well-known scholar in the area of purchasing management and was the Avnet Professor of Supply Chain Management from 2006 to 2018. He had 74 journal and professional publications in many supply chain journals, was chair or served on committees of 9 Ph.D. theses and as a senior research fellow in CAPS (Center for Applied Purchasing Studies) Research he helped direct much purchasing research that was aimed at chief purchasing officers (CPO’s) and fostered a strong relationship between the corporate partners and ASU. Joe also served on the editorial review boards of all of these publications: International Journal of Quality Science, European Journal of Purchasing and Logistics Management, Benchmarking for Quality Management and Technology, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Journal of Operations Management, and Operations Management Review. Joe was President of the University Senate in 2011-2012 during the time of the initial approval of ASU’s New American University plan and making ASU tobacco free. He also served as Vice Provost of the ASU West Campus and Associate Dean of the W. P. Carey School and had the responsibility to build and grow all of the business programs at the west campus. He also served as Associate Director General of the Thunderbird School of Global Management from 2015-2018. As noted in the department’s nomination of Joe: “perhaps most notably as a legend, Dr. Carter lead the transformation of the Business Administration Department into the current Supply Chain Management Department. In doing so he brought together faculty from the BA, Decision Sciences and Management departments to create such a strong and large department.” Since its inception, the Supply Chain Management Department has been ranked in the top 5 of research and academic rankings. And that in part is due to the foundation and culture that Dr. Carter created during his tenure as chair. For his exceptional work in the W. P. Carey School of Business and at Arizona State as a scholar, teacher and administrr, Joe was inducted into the W. P. Carey Hall of Fame.

Research Interests:

Professor Carter’s research efforts have been oriented toward purchasing and supply chain management issues. Of the 60 refereed journal articles and research monographs, all address issues of relevance within the field of purchasing and supply chain management. Professor Carter’s research contribution encompasses three major content areas: buyer and supplier communication processes and information exchange systems, international sourcing and supply chain management issues, and strategic procurement. Professor Carter is a principle investigator on a major project examining the role of corporate procurement in acquiring innovation and new product/service development process.
