Biography

Harvard Medical School

Dr. Jon Russell is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Division of Head and Neck Endocrine Surgery in the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. As such, he manages a broad range of thyroid and parathyroid surgical pathology and specializes in scarless transoral thyroidectomy, radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules, and parathyroidectomy. Of special interest are the extremes of thyroid surgery, managing simpler cases with scarless thyroidectomy or minimally invasive RFA, and more advanced cases with the latest technology to provide optimal outcomes. Dr. Russell is also the director of the Johns Hopkins Multi-Disciplinary Thyroid Tumor Center.

Furthermore, patient communication, satisfaction, and safety are key areas of interest. He has developed web-based tools to improve patient care following thyroidectomy, and lectures both nationally and internationally on thyroid and parathyroid problems. He was the first surgeon in the Western Hemisphere to manage thyroid cancer through a transoral scarless approach using robotic technology and continues to be the leader in innovative thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy techniques. He has published the largest Western series of transoral scarless thyroidectomy and mentored numerous surgeons internationally on the technique, also known as TOETVA. He has served on several committees of national organizations, including the Endocrine Surgery Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Currently, he is the chair of the Technology Committee of the Endocrine Section of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), and also serves on the Education Committee for the American Thyroid Association (ATA). His treatment philosophy is that every patient deserves an individualized treatment strategy and that communication between physician and patient is a vital part of the healing process.
