Biography
UW Professional & Continuing Education
John Zarling earned his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin for six years prior to joining the faculty of the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1976. At UAF he taught, served as an administrator and conducted research in areas of arctic engineering and heat transfer. After his retirement from UAF in the late '90s, Zarling continued to teach the arctic engineering course at UAF and developed an active engineering consulting practice, Zarling Aero and Engineering.
His past clients include Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., Michael Baker, CH2M Hill, ConocoPhillips, Denali Gas Pipeline, Golder and Associates, Alaska DOT and CRREL. Zarling has taught the University of Washington Cold Regions Engineering short course since 1978.
