Boston University
John Weis has taught part-time at Boston University since 2010. In addition to his self-
created courses, he has worked with students on the Urban Symposium and numerous
theses, self-directed projects, and courses.
John spent much of his career with two of the most dynamic Public Development entities
in the United States, the Boston Redevelopment Agency (now the Boston Planning and
Development Agency) and the San Jose Redevelopment Agency. While at the BRA, John
was the Director of Community Planning and later created the Neighborhood
Development Agency for then Mayor Kevin White. From 1994 to 2010, he was with the
San Jose Redevelopment Agency where he held various positions, most recently as the
Assistant Executive Director. He was involved with a wide variety of projects including
the creation of over 5,000 housing units in the City’s downtown and Neighborhood
Business Districts, the retention or attraction of numerous companies including Cisco
Systems, Ebay and Adobe, and the creation of it’s Biotechnology Incubator. While in San
Jose, he taught and lectured at San Jose State University.
Between these two coastal careers, John was Vice President of Kenney Development
Company and was partner or project manager for over $100,000,000 in mixed use and
residential projects, most of which were historic rehabilitations. As a consultant to Boston
University, he was the project manager for the Campus Master Plan, which converted the
former Commonwealth Armory into housing and the new Agganis Arena. From 1982 to
1994, John taught part-time for the Master of City Planning Program at Boston
University.
John has been the Vice Chair and Chair of the Newbury Planning Board where he has
served since 2011, and also serves as Commissioner at the Merrimac Valley Planning
Commission.
