Biography

I am an environmental and social historian of early modern Britain. My current research focusses on water in early modern England, and in particular flooding and drainage. I am also interested in the history of all manner of pigeons, and have previously published on a range of topics from the Elizabethan settlement to urban fire disasters.

I enjoy teaching on a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules focussed on early modern history, material culture and public history. I am happy to supervise postgraduate students working on early modern environmental, social and agricultural history. From September 2017, I am the divisional Student Activities Officer and SSLC co-ordinator. In these roles I oversee the Manchester Historian, History''s peer mentoring scheme, the History Society, and our student-staff liaison committee. I also serve on the board of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library.

Prior to joining Manchester as a Lecturer in Early Modern History in September 2016, I was the Eileen Power Economic History Society Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London. I completed my BA, MA and PhD in the department of history at the University of Warwick.
