Biography

Merage School of Business

John Joseph is an Associate Professor of Strategy at the University of California Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business. John received his PhD from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He also holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. John has taught in the full-time, part-time and executive education programs at Kellogg, has taught in the core curriculum for Duke’s full-time MBA program, and now teaches core strategy (full and part-time) and executive education programs at UC Irvine. He is a decorated instructor who has received several teaching awards.

John’s research examines organizational designs for better strategic planning, technology development, and growth. John’s research has been published or is forthcoming in the Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Academy of Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Advances in Strategic Management, Academy of Management Proceedings and other peer-reviewed publications, and has also developed a number of case studies on strategic decision making. John is a member of the Academy of Management and is a representative-atlarge of the strategic process interest group of the Strategic Management Society. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Organizational Design, and serves as an editorial board member of the management field’s top two journals: Administrative Science Quarterly and Strategic Management Journal. He is currently co-editing a volume of Advances in Strategic Management on Organizational Design.

John’s experience outside academia includes managerial positions in the technology, pharmaceutical and non-profit sectors. His speaking, research and consulting engagements include: Argyle Executive Forum, British Petroleum, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, CMO Council, Dart Enterprises, Duke University Hospital, General Electric, Heidrick and Struggles, Kellogg Center for Non-Profit Management, Market-bridge, Molina Healthcare, Motorola, and Samsung Electronics.
