Professor Emeritus

Professor Gordon has taught at the Royal Military College (1959-1963), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1965-1967), the University of Western Ontario (1966-1972), Stanford University (1988-1989) and IMEDE(Management Development Institute) in Switzerland (1969-1975) prior to joining the faculty at Queen''s in 1975. He served as Dean of Smith School of Business from 1978 to 1988. During the academic year 1995-96 he was a Visiting Scholar in the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of British Columbia. In 1998 he was a Shaw Foundation Visiting Professor in the School of Accountancy and Business at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore for four months. From February to April of 1999 he was a University of Auckland Foundation Visitor in the Department of Management Science & Information Systems. From July of 1999 to June of 2001 he was the Chairman of the MBA for Science & Technology Program at Queen’s University. His areas of research activity include operations strategy, the measurement of manufacturing performance, the implementation of innovative technology and flexible working conditions. He has published in the Harvard Business Review, the California Management Review, the Sloan Management Review, the Business Quarterly, the Canadian Business Review and Interfaces. Professor Gordon has developed and taught in management development programs for Alcan, ITT, General Motors, IMEDE, CNR, CCL, Nestle, the Empire Financial Group, Noranda, Falconbridge, ICI, CANMET, Western Mining Corporation, The Aluminium Co. of Dubai, the Queen''s Executive Program, the Banff School of Advanced Management, the Dalhousie Executive Development Program and the University of Western Ontario. He has or is serving on the board of a number of Canadian companies as well as the Canadian Labour Markets and Productivity Centre, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Operations Management Association and the Canadian Quality Management Centre. During 1984 he served as a one-man Commission investigating the Ontario Drug Benefit Plan and subsequently as Chairman of the Fee Negotiating Committee for 1987-88. He has also served as an expert witness in OMB hearings and is currently a member of the Research Advisory Council for the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Professor Gordon is or has been a member of the Institute of Management Sciences, the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, the American Institute for Decision Sciences, the Academy of Management, the American Production and Inventory Control Society, the Operations Management Association, the Production and Operations Management Society, and the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada. He is a former Chairman of the Canadian Federation of Deans of Management and Administrative Studies.
