Kenan-Flagler Business School

Jack Evans completed his third term as interim dean at UNC Kenan-Flagler on Jan. 31, 2014. 

He joined UNC as an operations management professor in 1970, and was the Phillip Hettleman Professor of Operations when he retired from UNC Kenan-Flagler in 2010.

His teaching and research involved using analytical approaches to solve business decision problems and applying process improvement principles in product and service contexts. He was an examiner and senior examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from 1989-93, and a judge from 1993-96. He served on the board of overseers for the Baldrige Award from 2001-03, and as chair for the last two years of that term. 

Dr. Evans served as dean of UNC Kenan-Flagler from 1979-87. He was president of AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and chaired a two-year project to redesign its accreditation process for business schools.

He served as executive director of Carolina North, coordinating the planning of this research campus for UNC-Chapel Hill, from 2006-2010; as UNC’s interim vice chancellor for finance and administration from 1999-2000; and as UNC’s faculty representative to the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference for 15 years. 

Dr. Evans received the Hugh & Jane McColl Faculty Development Award in 1991 and the Roy W. Holsten Distinguished Service Award in 1996 from UNC Kenan-Flagler; the C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award in 2002, which recognizes unusual, meritorious or superior contributions by University staff; the General Alumni Association Faculty Service Award in 2005; the UNC Jefferson Award in 2010; and the UNC Kenan-Flagler Leadership Award in 2012.

He received his PhD, MS and BME from Cornell University.
