Biography

Dr. Jin Sik Kim is an assistant professor in Data Analytics & MIS at the Department of Management, The Gary W. Rollins College of Business, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Dr. Kim primarily focuses on understanding the economic impact of digital technologies and the value creation process. More specifically, Dr. Kim applies economics to examine how to create business value with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data. In his research, there are many questions about the appropriate roles of machine algorithms and humans, specifically how they can complement one another.

There are a number of common themes in his current research: (1) measuring the direct and indirect economic impacts of ML/AI applications and (2) examining whether humans and AI/ML systems are substitutes or complements, and (3) finding the impact of ML application on electronic market structures.

His work has been reviewed at journals and conferences including Information Systems Research, Workshop on Information Systems and Economics (WISE), Statistical Challenges in Electronic Commerce Research (SCECR), and INFORMS. His work is supported by companies such as SAMSUNG Everland, WD, and the Barum.

Dr. Kim holds Dual Bachelor's degrees in Journalism & Management Information Systems from Yonsei University, South Korea. Also, he holds an MPIA degree from UC San Diego and another Master's degree from Maxwell School of Economics, Syracuse University. Finally, he earned his Ph.D. degree in Information Systems at the Paul Merage School of Business, UC Irvine. His Ph.D. dissertation title is "Essays in Value Creation with Digital Technologies: The Role of Machine Learning and Human Experts."
