James "Jimmy" Winfield is an associate professor in the College of Accounting at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He teaches financial reporting and corporate governance for the College, as well as business ethics for the Philosophy Department. He has also taught financial and management accounting at UCT's Graduate School of Business.
He holds a B.Bus.Sci, a B.Com (Hons), a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, all from UCT, and an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar in Exeter College. Before following his love of teaching he worked in commerce as an accountant, auditor and management consultant, and has run a few small businesses.
His writing has been published broadly, including in the academic journal South African Journal of Accounting Research, and the professional journal Accountancy SA. He has presented at multiple academic and professional conferences, produced commissioned research reports for private industry, and offered a variety of in-house seminars at organisations such as Allan Gray, Coronation Fund Managers, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. With Mark Graham and Tarryn Miller, he is the co-author of another excellent book related to business, Understanding Financial Statements.
