MIT Professional Education

Jim Bales is Associate Director and Instructor at the MIT Edgerton Center. He is the instructor for 6.163 Strobe Project Lab, the photography course that Doc Edgerton offered for many years. In addition, he is the instructor for 6.070 Electronics Project Lab. Dr. Bales has, over the years, studied the optical properties of semiconductors, built robot submarines, debugged assembly language programs while seasick, traveled as far north as Greenland and as far south as Tasmania, and taught electronics and high-speed imaging.

Jim Bales has been with the Edgerton Center since 1998. He is the instructor for 6.163 Strobe Project Lab, the photography course that Doc Edgerton offered for many years. In addition, he is the instructor for 6.070/ EC.120 Electronics Project Lab. In November 2013, Dr. Bales gave a presentation at TEDx BeaconStreet on how to capture images of splashes.
