Biography
Jill Long Thompson is a former three-term Congresswoman from Indiana. She currently teaches ethics for SPEA and the Kelley School of Business. Prior to her work at Indiana University, Long Thompson served as the board chair and chief executive officer of the Farm Credit Administration, a position to which she was appointed by President Barack Obama.
Long Thompson’s political career began when she was elected to the Valparaiso City Council in 1983. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1989. In 1995, President Bill Clinton nominated her to serve as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Rural Development. Long Thompson was the Democratic nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in 1986 and for governor in 2008. She was the first woman nominated for either office by a major political party in Indiana.
The first person in her family to graduate from college, Long Thompson graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in Columbia City. She earned an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University, and a B.S. in Business from Valparaiso University. Long Thompson lives with her husband Don Thompson in Marshall County on a farm near Argos, Indiana.
