Biography

Carlson School of Management

Jiao (pronounced 'jyow') Luo joined the Carlson School in 2012, having received her doctoral training in management and organizational theory at Columbia Business School. Jiao's research is at the intersection of organization theory and non-market strategy. Building on the notion that non-market activities may benefit firm performance, her work addresses the question of why firms engage in these activities, under which conditions might nonmarket activities benefit shareholders, and what may be the impact of firms' nonmarket actions on society separate from the impact on firms. Her research contexts include both corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and collective governance arrangements. Jiao's research has been published or forthcoming at peer-reviewed outlets such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. Jiao serves as Associate Editor at the Strategic Management Journal, sits on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Review, and Administrative Science Quarterly, and co-edited vol. 38 of Advances in Strategic Management in 'Sustainability, Stakeholder Governance, and Corporate Social Responsibility'. Jiao's work has been recognized by a number of awards, including Strategic Management Society (SMS) Best Conference Paper Prize (Honorable Mention), Academy of Management Meeting STR Distinguished Paper Award (Winner), Academy of Management Meeting OMT Best Paper on Environmental and Social Practices Award (Finalist), Alliance of Research in Corporate Sustainability Outstanding Paper Award (Winner), and the LBS Transatlantic Doctoral Conference Best Paper Award (Winner of the Strategy Track). Jiao earned her Bachelor's degree in Economics from Renmin University of China, and joint Master's degree in Public and Economic Policy from London School of Economics and Political Science and Columbia University.
