Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Lifespan and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University announced today that Jeremiah D. Schuur, M.D., M.H.S., FACEP, has been appointed physician-in-chief for emergency medicine at Lifespan and chair of the department of emergency medicine at Brown. The announcement comes after a yearlong national search.

Dr. Schuur currently serves as chief of the division of health policy translation and vice chair of clinical affairs in the department of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also an associate professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Schuur will assume his new duties on Dec. 1.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Schuur to Lifespan, where he will undoubtedly help further our world-class emergency medicine program and our commitment to safe, timely and patient-centered care,” said Timothy J. Babineau, M.D., Lifespan president and CEO. “Dr. Schuur’s credentials speak to his dedication to clinical excellence and consistent pursuit of quality improvement.”

Dr. Schuur’s appointment marks a return to Rhode Island for him, as he completed his residency in emergency medicine through Brown at Rhode Island Hospital, capped by a year as chief resident and assistant instructor at the medical school.

“It’s wonderful to have one of our residency alumni return to Brown in this important role,” said Jack A. Elias, M.D., senior vice president for health affairs and dean of medicine and biological sciences at Brown. “Dr. Schuur has distinguished himself throughout his career as a clinician teacher, researcher and mentor, which will be a tremendous benefit for our medical students and residents.”

Dr. Schuur earned his B.A. in history and biology at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, followed by his medical degree at New York University School of Medicine in New York City. He went on to complete a fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Yale University, during which time he completed his master’s in health sciences and was an attending physician in the emergency department of Yale New Haven Hospital.

Since 2007, Dr. Schuur has been at Brigham and Women’s and Harvard, where he rose through numerous progressively responsible leadership positions.

In 2010, he earned a certificate in executive leadership from Harvard Business School.

Dr. Schuur has focused much of his career on quality improvement and patient safety, leading these areas at his own hospital and medical school, advising others across the country as a member of numerous work groups and task forces, and conducting and publishing extensive research in the field.

Dr. Schuur has won many awards for excellence in research and teaching, dating back to his residency and including recent recognitions, among them the Faculty Mentorship Award for the Brigham and Women’s department of emergency medicine and the Partners in Excellence Award from Partners HealthCare System in 2016.

He is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and has held numerous committee leadership posts within the organization, including current service as co-lead of E-QUAL, a national quality improvement network that the college has created as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative.

Dr. Schuur replaces Brian Zink, M.D., who took a position at the University of Michigan Medical School last fall.
