His research focuses on risk management in general, and climate risk management and the use of parametric derivatives in particular.

He publishes his research in leading academic journals such as The European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Business Research, Applied Economics, Journal of Asset Management, Harvard Business Review, and appears regularly in the media to disseminate the results of his work on the links between economics and climate.

He is a 2012 MPIA laureate, a programme for the dissemination of academic research into the real economy, which enabled him to co-found Meteo Protect, a technology start-up, where he directed research and development activities for nearly 6 years. Before joining ESSCA, Jean-Louis Bertrand spent most of his career outside France.
