Biography
Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing
Dr James Moultrie is a Senior Lecturer in Design Management at the Institute for Manufacturing, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.
He is a fellow in engineering at Selwyn College, Cambridge and is Director of Graduate Education for the School of Technology. James is also an Associate Editor of Creativity and Innovation Management Journal.
Background
James has a background in both industrial design and mechanical engineering. Before joining academia, James had an industrial career, as a project manager, senior engineer and marketing product manager. In industry he was responsible for numerous projects, including metrology instruments and a range of lenses for the movie industry for which he was awarded a 'Scientific and Technical Academy Award' (Oscar) and an Emmy in 2000. James is also a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (IMechE).
Research interests
James coordinates the Design Management Group at the Institute for Manufacturing, which aims to understand and improve ways in which design and New Product Development might be managed, with three specific interests:
- Developing new tools and techniques to enable better management of design or new product development, to develop sustainable products which are beautiful, usable, easy to produce.
- Exploring new ways of managing NPD that address the inherent weaknesses of formal phase-review approaches.
- Measuring the value of design at a firm or national level.
