Biography

Iain Hay is Matthew Flinders Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Geography in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University. He is former foundation Dean (Education) for the College and was also Australian Discipline Scholar for the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. Iain completed his PhD at the University of Washington as a Fulbright Scholar and received a LittD from the University of Canterbury for work on geographies of domination and oppression. He is author or editor of many books including Qualitative Research Methods in Human Geography (5th edn Oxford 2021) ; Handbook on Wealth and the Super-Rich (Elgar 2016); and How to be an Academic Superhero. Developing and Sustaining a Career in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (Elgar 2017). He co-founded Ethics, Place and Environment and has had significant editorial roles with numerous journals, including as Editor-in-Chief of Geographical Research. Iain has an enduring commitment to geographical education. He received the 2006 Prime Minister's Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year and was later seconded to a major national leadership role for academic standards development. He also has a long history of service to geographical discipline bodies including as Secretary and President of the Institute of Australian Geographers. He is currently First Vice-President of the International Geographical Union, Vice-President of the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia, and Deputy Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Geographical Sciences. Iain has been admitted as a Fellow to numerous organisations including the Academy of Social Sciences, American Association of Geographers, Australian College of Educators, Australian Instiute of Company Directors, Institute of Australian Geographers, and the New Zealand Geographical Society. He is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Iain Hay is interested in geographies of oppression and domination, wealth and income inequality, the super-rich and human-environment relations. He also has a significant record of scholarly work on research ethics and learning and teaching.
