The Robert H. Smith School of Business

Dr. Hugh Turner is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. While teaching undergraduate and graduate course in supply chain management, he has been recognized as one of the Smith School’s top 15% in teaching, was a finalist in the Smith School’s Krowe Award for teaching with technology, and in 2009 won the Legg-Mason award for Teaching Innovation. Turner has served as Academic Director for the Smith Start program since 2007.

Turner’s industry experience includes working as a private truck fleet manager for a major retailer, a consultant to the railroad industry, and a navigator in the merchant marine where he held an unlimited chief mate’s license allowing him to sail ocean going ships around the globe. Turner’s research interests include seaport policy and economics with emphasis on cost structures, port productivity and infrastructure investment. In 2004, his dissertation was awarded first place in the transportation field by the American Economics Association.
