INSEAD Business School

Howard E. Book, M.D., D.Psych., F.R.C.P.C., F.A.P.A., is a psychoanalytic organizational consultant and psychoanalytic psychiatrist. He is a founding member of Associates in Workplace Consultation, through which he offers consultation to medium and large-sized organizations.

For the past decade Dr. Book's consultative focus has concentrated on offering a facilitative process that aids the organization in identifying and resolving unknown, unspoken, and ‘under-the-surface’ concerns that, left unaddressed, deleteriously affect culture, distort communication, inhibit spontaneity, and ultimately erode profitability. Through enhancing the Emotional Intelligence of senior executives and facilitating a process that encourages the development of an emotionally intelligent organization, Dr. Book aids the organization in developing a competitive edge in today's changing and demanding environment.

Dr. Book has lectured and offered workshops on Emotional Intelligence throughout Canada and the United States. His writings have appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Globe and Mail Report on Business, the Ivey Business Journal, and the Harvard Business Review. With his co-author, Steven Stein, Ph.D., Dr. Book has authored the recently published book, The EQ Edge: Emotional Intelligence and Your Success. Of all the business books released in Canada in 2000, The EQ Edge was cited by the Business Section of The Globe and Mail as #3 among the top 12.

Dr. Book graduated in medicine from the University of Manitoba; and did post-graduate training in psychiatry at the University of Toronto, where, until 1995, he served as Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Women's College Hospital. He is a former board member of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations a current member of that organization, and an invited member the U.S.A.-based Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence In Organizations (CREIO). His managerial training has taken place through short courses offered by the Ontario Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and Harvard University. He holds the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Toronto, Canada; and has been a visiting professor at the Business School of the Universidad del Desarrollo in Concepcion, Chile.
