Biography
Hildy Teegen is the USC Education Foundation Chaired Professor in International Business after serving six years as the dean of the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining USC in September 2007, she was founding director of The George Washington University’s Center for International Business Education and Research in Washington, D.C. Teegen also held a joint appointment at GWU as professor of international business at the School of Business and professor of international affairs at the Elliott School.
Teegen earned bachelor''s degrees in Latin American Studies and International Business and Finance from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. In 1993, she received her Ph.D. in International Business (with a sub-specialty in Marketing Strategy and Economic Development), also from the University of Texas at Austin.
She is a recognized expert in teaching negotiations, having designed and co-led the nation''s premier program to teach professors how to teach international business negotiation courses through Duke University''s Center for International Business Education and Research for many years. Her research on negotiations and interactions between multinational firms, governments and nongovernmental organizations further informs her teaching in this arena.
Teegen has written extensively about global business, most recently about interactions between firms, governments and nongovernmental organizations. She has edited two books and co-authored two more. Her research has been widely published in such journals as the Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Business and Society, Journal of World Business, Journal of Management Information Systems, Management International Review, The World Economy, Journal of World Business, The International Trade Journal, Journal of International Management, Journal of International Business and Economy, Academy of Management Journal, Thunderbird International Business Review, Banca Nazionale del Lavoro Quarterly Review, Business Economics, Multinational Business Review, Journal of Business Venturing, International Business Review, The Journal of Business Ethics and The American Journal of Management Development.
Teegen served as department editor until 2007 (Institutions and Comparative Capitalism) for the Journal of International Business Studies, the premier academic journal in the field. She was an editorial board member for Journal of International Management from 1999 to 2006. She was a founding executive board member of the Women of the Academy of International Business (AIB).
Fluent in Spanish, Teegen has lived in Mexico, Portugal, the Dominican Republic and Grand Cayman Island. She has taught international business at the George Washington University, The College of William & Mary, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México in Mexico City, the University of Texas at Austin, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in Monterrey, Mexico, Universidade do Porto in Oporto, Portugal, and ESAN University in Lima, Peru.
Teegen received The George Washington University School of Business Dean’s Scholar Award for 2006-2007 and the school’s Board of Advisors Award for Faculty Service in 2005. In 2005, she also won the Best Reviewer Award from the International Management Division of the Academy of Management.
Teegen is a member of the Academy of International Business, the Academy of Management and the Business Sustainability Advisory Panel of the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group and was a member of the Continuous Improvement Review Committee and the Globalization of Business Education task force of the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business and co-author of the Globalization of Management Education report of the AACSB. She is on the editorial board of BizEd, the trade journal for business schools globally, and served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at ESAN University in Lima, Peru.
She is a director for the corporate boards of Cox Industries (SC) and Premo Ventures (SC) and for the Center for International Private Enterprise (Washington, D.C.) and the Fulbright Association (Washington, D.C.). Teegen is a Liberty Fellow (SC) and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network and has belonged to the Young Presidents Organization since 2010.
In 2015, she co-founded HarborGood, a marketplace solution for social purpose organizations to mobilize their communities around next generation philanthropy.
Research Interests
Her research interests include nongovernmental organizations, intersectoral negotiation, Latin American business and policy, extractive industries, sharing economy and corporate reputation.
