Heng Wang

Heng Wang is associate professor and co-director of UNSW Law’s Herbert Smith Freehills China International Business and Economic Law (CIBEL) Centre. Before joining UNSW, Heng was a professor at Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL), China, and headed a WTO law centre (established by the Department of Treaty and Law, Chinese Ministry of Commerce and SWUPL). He was a Max Weber Fellow at the EUI, and conducted research at the WTO Secretariat.

Heng’s current research focus is China’s approach to international economic legal order (including the Belt and Road Initiative, and possible digital RMB), its rationale and implications. In addition to his books, he has published in leading journals, been often cited and interviewed (e.g., ABC, BBC, CGTN, SBS, South China Morning Post, The Australian, and Xinhua). He has received several major grants and top research awards, including the triennial China Outstanding Law Research Award, (twice – China Law Society) and the Outstanding Research Award in Humanities and Social Science (Chinese Ministry of Education).

He was or is executive council member of one global, two Asian and all three Chinese societies of international economic law, such as a founding member of the Asian International Economic Law Network. He has been invited to speak at the WTO Headquarters and many leading institutions (e.g., Harvard University and Oxford University), and teach at around ten top universities in Canada, China, Japan, Singapore and the US as visiting professor.

Heng has advised or provided training to the government, international organization, and the private sector, and is an arbitrator of arbitration institutions inside and outside China.
