Expert on Chinese economy and business, Visiting Professor of Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, Guanghua School of Management at Peking University As a visiting professor, he teaches at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in the United States, at the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University in Beijing, and at Lingnan (University) College in Guangzhou, China. His book “China and the Credit Crisis: the emergence of a new world order” was published by John Wiley in 2009, and in a Chinese edition by CITIC Press in Beijing in 2010 under the title ‘Is China Ready?’ As a journalist, he has written many opinion articles for the Financial Times (Chinese edition), the Economic Observer (Beijing) and China Daily, on topics like ‘Should we be trying limit emigration from China’, ‘The Third Plenum: Disappointment, or a step forward?’, and ‘The acquisition of Smithfield Foods by Shuanghui’. Giles’ involvement in China began in 1989, when he co-founded a successful advisory business with offices in London, Shanghai and Beijing, which assisted many British multinationals to enter the China market, and enabled over 70 technology transfers from Europe to China, in fields as diverse as aerospace, automotive and submarine radio communication systems. In 2003 he co-founded a China-focused boutique investment bank called Evolution Securities China based in London, Shanghai and Hong Kong, which raised capital for private Chinese companies in London and Hong Kong, and advised institutional investors in Europe and the US on the Chinese equity markets. Prior to 1989, Giles served in the British Army, and worked in the City of London as an equity salesman and a fund manager. He holds an MA in History from St Andrews University, and an MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth College, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
