Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro is currently the Director of Consortium for National Health Research: CNHR Kenya. He has held many academic and professional positions among them Chairman, Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Nairobi (1995-1999), Head, Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)/ Wellcome Trust Programme, Nairobi (1998-2008).and Chairman, Expert Committee on Clinical Trials, Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Ministry of Health, Kenya (2009-Present). Areas of research interests include: Pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and drug metabolism, Health Systems research, Clinical pharmacology of drugs used in the treatment of tropical diseases., Clinical pharmacology of anticonvulsant drugs used in children, Drug Management and Rational Drug Use in Health Facilities, Clinical Trials and lastly Proteomics and severe disease: potential for development of new diagnostic and disease monitoring techniques. Prof. Kokwaro has published over 80 full articles and abstracts in international peer-reviewed Journals in the area clinical pharmacology of drugs used in the treatment of infection. He has also been the editor and lead contributor to a regional formulary on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria for Eastern, Central and Southern African Countries. He supervised several Masters, PhD and Post-Doctoral students, and examined several PhD Theses in Europe, Africa and India. He has been a reviewer for several international journals including: Clinical Infectious Diseases; British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology; Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene; East African Medical Journal; Malaria Journal He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MSc in Pharmaceutics from University of Nairobi. He also holds a PhD in Pharmacokinetics from University of Liverpool, UK.
