The London School of Economics and Political Science

Gerardo del Cerro Santamaría is a member of the European Union Expert Group in Regional Policy (Regio Program) and a United States Fulbright Award Recipient in Urban Planning. In Spring 2020 he served as Visiting Scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In Fall 2022 he will be a Visiting Scholar at University College London. Previously he served as a United States Professional Ambassador in Asia and Latin America (U.S. Faculty Fulbright Program), and as Advisor to the U.N. Development Programme. Professor del Cerro has been contributing to the development of institutional planning, strategy and innovation as Senior Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Innovation and Research Professor of Planning and Megaprojects at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in Manhattan. He has also served as Visiting Professor at MIT, a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, and a Program Director (Gateway Engineering) at the U.S. National Science Foundation. Dr. del Cerro Santamaría holds Ph.D.´s from the New School for Social Research in Manhattan (full-tuition scholarship) and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain. Previously, he had obtained undergraduate degrees in Science and Mathematical Logic & Philosophy of Science in Spain. As an International Advisor, he has worked in India, Russia, South Korea, United Kingdom and Japan. He is the author, inter alia, of Bilbao. Basque Pathways to Globalization (2007), editor of, and contributor to, Urban Megaprojects. A Worldwide View (2013), contributor to The Oxford Handbook of Megaproject Management (2017), and author of A Critique of Neoliberalism in Higher Education (2019, Oxford University Press). He has published extensively (over 85 publications, including books, book chapters, scientific articles and encyclopedia entries) on economics and urbanism, development, sustainability and the impact of iconic architecture on urban revitalization. In addition, he has published on technological futures, innovation districts, robotics research and the mathematics of music. His new book, Megaprojects in the World Economy. Complexity, Disruption and Sustainable Development will be published in late 2022 by Columbia University Press. He´s been invited to present his work at venues in the USA, Europe, Africa and Asia. Dr. del Cerro Santamaría is a member of the Centre Internationale pour la Recherche Transdisciplinaire (CIRET) in Paris, the Academy of International Business, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the New York Academy of Sciences. Gerardo particularly enjoys reading good books, both classic and contemporary, about quantum physics, evolutionary biology, theory of architecture and complexity economics. He resides in New York City. A music lover and classical piano player, he holds the degree of "Professor of Piano" from the Joaquín Turina Conservatory in Madrid, and actively participates in New York's musical life.
