Gerard J. Lian entered the municipal bond profession in 1982 as an Associate Attorney with Wood & Dawson, a municipal bond law firm. After practicing municipal bond law for two years he decided to enter the financial side of the business by pursuing a MPA degree at NYU Wagner School and by taking a position as Senior Municipal Bond Analyst with American Express where he worked for seven years developing specialized expertise analyzing municipal utilities, single family housing bonds and a wide range of tax-supported debt.
In 1991 Mr. Lian accepted a position with Dean Witter InterCapital, which later merged with Morgan Stanley and its Van Kampen investment subsidiary. He was promoted to Executive Director at Morgan Stanley Investment Management responsible for analyzing municipal investment grade bonds, tax-exempt corporate bonds and municipal high-yield securities. Mr. Lian has developed specialized expertise in Single Family Housing Bonds, Public Power Bonds, Project Financings, Corporate IDBs, Airport GARB Bonds, Special Facility Bonds and Tobacco Securitization Bonds. He has also developed extensive experience in overseeing distressed loans and bond restructurings. Effective June 1, 2010 Mr. Lian joined Invesco in conjunction with its acquisition of all Morgan Stanley/Van Kampen tax-exempt retail mutual funds where he presently works as Senior Analyst.
Mr. Lian has served in leadership positions within the municipal finance industry, first as Chairman of the Municipal Analysts Group of New York in 2000-2001, later as Chairman of the National Federation of Municipal Analysts in 2004. He is a frequent speaker and panelist at industry conferences and has authored a number of publications. He has served as an Adjunct Faculty member at the New York University MPA Program at Wagner School since 2009.
Mr. Lian is a graduate cum laude of Drew University, holds a J.D. degree from Rutgers Law School, Camden, N.J. and a M.P.A. degree from the New York University Robert Wagner School of Public Service.
