Biography

Geoffrey Proehl’s areas of expertise include dramaturgy, directing, theater history, and American drama. His co-written book Toward a Dramaturgical Sensibility: Landscape and Journey (Fairleigh Dickinson, 2008), received the Outstanding Book Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. He also is the author of a study of American family drama: Coming Home Again: American Family Drama and the Figure of the Prodigal. Proehl was a contributor to and co-editor of Dramaturgy in American Theater: A Source Book. He has written articles for The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, the Encyclopedia of English Studies and the Language Arts, and Theater Topics. Professionally he has worked with the Guthrie Theatre, Arena Stage, the People’s Light and Theatre Company, and Tacoma Actors Guild. Proehl is on the editorial board of the journal Theatre Topics and is the website editor for Dramaturgy Northwest. He is past president of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. Proehl is working on a project tentatively titled “Chamberlain and the River: The Dramaturgy of Memory.”
